Vertical or parietal gastrectomy or "sleeve"
This laparoscopic surgery (small incisions in the abdomen) involves removing 70% of the patient's stomach. By removing most of the stomach, the specialized surgeon will thus be able to allow his patient to lose weight thanks to the restrictive effect of the procedure.
This procedure, known to be safe and involve less risk of complications than other more invasive surgeries, is intended to be an effective treatment against obesity in adults. Feeling full will be easier to achieve since the remaining stomach, about the size of a banana, will no longer produce as much of the hunger hormone called ghrelin.
Unlike the surgery of Gastric bypass, the absorption of food is not disturbed and it is the fact of not being able to eat as much food that causes weight loss (dietary restriction). It is also because the portions will be reduced that it will be important to eat well.
Vertical gastrectomy is an effective surgical treatment for obesity that also has beneficial effects on high blood pressure, sleep apnea, hyperlipemia, type 2 diabetes and several conditions commonly found in overweight people.
