Roux-en-Y gastric bypass or "bypass"
Roux-en-Y gastric bypass takes its name from its inventor César Roux. More commonly known as “gastric bypass”, this surgery is performed laparoscopically (small incisions on the abdomen) by our experienced surgeon.
Surgery combines the effects of restriction (significant reduction in the size of the stomach) and malabsorption (food is less well absorbed by the digestive system because its trajectory is altered).
The surgeon creates a small gastric pouch that will be connected to the middle part of the small intestine.
Research also shows a decrease in the level of the “hunger hormone” (ghrelin) usually secreted in the stomach.
Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is an effective surgical treatment for obesity that also has beneficial effects on high blood pressure, sleep apnea, hyperlipemia, type 2 diabetes and several conditions commonly found in obese people.
